Photographing people's pets takes patients and can seem challenging. With a few simple things to keep in mind and a little practice, you will be snapping photographs in no time.

People tend to treat their pets like people. They love to brag and show and tell other people about their pets.

What better way to show them off than to take photographs of them. Having a good photograph to show gives them pleasure in showing off their pets.

Taking photographs of animals especially dogs takes patients. Don't be in a hurry...Keep picture taking sessions short...Take lots of photographs...There will be a lot of blurry ones as well as two or three great shots. Make sure you have enough room on your memory card or have extra cards for lots of photographs.

Pets are unpredictable, especially dogs so be prepared for movement and shoot quickly and often.

Take photographs outdoors if possible. This will put the pet in a natural setting and give the best light. Try to get good background (foliage, plants) shots. Take pictures in a place where the pet is most familiar with such as in the yard or park where they walk their dog.

Have some type of toy or a small snack to keep the pets attention.

It's best to take photographs outdoors on a clear day, in the early morning or late afternoon. Avoid taking pictures if it's cloudy or overcast.

Indoor photographs should be bright and well lit. Pay attention to the background. Dark colored pets should be photographed in front of lighter backgrounds. Light colored pets should be photographed in front of darker backgrounds.

You will need to have the necessary and proper lighting for the best results. Using natural light rather than a flash is best. Avoid using flash to keep "red eye" effect out of the photographs.

Some of the best pictures you can capture of a pet is when they are acting naturally and not looking at the camera. It's best to take photographs at eye level rather than standing over them.

People have many other pets besides dog and cats that they would want to be photographed. They have pet birds, fish, hamsters, reptiles, rabbits, etc. The best approach to photographing these pets is to create a photograph box or photographing them in their cage or habitat.

Always remember to be on your guard. Although animals can be cute and adorable don't forget they are still animals and unpredictable especially around strangers.
